Malinois Breeders and Breeding

If you are reading this page, you are probably already thinking about getting a Belgian Malinois. To help you make your decision, the American Belgian Malinois Club strongly recommends that you review the following material:

How to Identify a Reputable Breeder

What a Breeder Should Provide

Breeder Code of Ethics

Current Breeder List

The ABMC maintains a Breeder Referral List and has a recommended Breeder Code of Ethics. Breeders listed on the BRL have signed the Code of Ethics, agree with its contents and will be removed from the list in the event of any violations. It is recommended you question breeders to verify they follow the COE guidelines. The ABMC does not guarantee the actions/dogs of any breeder, but does offer suggestions for selecting an ethical breeder.

Reputable breeders will supply you with documentation on the sire and dam’s registration, O.F.A., and C.E.R.F. (health) certifications, a three generation pedigree, and a purchase agreement (contract). The purchase agreement should stipulate the health guarantee, price, agreement for future spaying and neutering (if any), and any other terms to which the seller and purchaser have agreed.

It’s important to note that ethical/responsible breeders do not mass produce litters. They may have one litter a year, maybe two, and you may have to wait to get a new puppy. Early contact with breeders is recommended. Also, don’t allow geography to limit your selection of a breeder as it is very unlikely that you will be able to find one in your town/city.

There are also many excellent dogs who have lost their homes through no fault of their own. Homes can be lost through death, divorce, relocation, illness, or many other reasons. A “ready made dog” can be a great choice for the first-time owner. The American Belgian Malinois Club rescues, evaluates, and places Malinois in new homes. Check our current Rescue List.
